Embodied sound art

Ran is an embodied sound artist who makes performances using devised frameworks to explore
sound, body, and environment through mutuality.

Ran’s practice often employs novel listening and sounding apparatus that he constructs and designs,
so as to create networks that can be manipulated, embodied and enacted.

Heartstring

A piece that holds the perfomers heartbeat and their enviroment in mutuality.

The performer sounds their heartbeat through a wired transducer, that is fed back to the environment, which resonates as the wire is manipulated in an improvised enactment of body and space.

Orders of magnitude

The piece comprises a d.i.y metal plate speaker through which Ran performs improvised breathing routines. The work is only ever performed in a live setting, it is never rehearsed or practiced.

The performance ends at the point of complete physical exertion making its length indeterminate. These conditions make it so every iteration is distinct and mirrors the performers physicality,

Mouthpiece

A series of experiments resulting in severe vertigo with 6 months of rehabilitation.

Using a trasnducer and stethoscope microphone feedacking voice with a mechanical excitation of vocal chords.

The vibrations unfortunately dislodged the small crystals in the left ear canal responisble for balance resulting in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), the symptoms of which persisted for half a year.

The work has become a lost work never to be re-enacted  for fear of injury.

Mouthpieces

A two perfomer version of mouthpiece.
The work employs a feedback loop where voice is transfered via transducer between the two performers.
Two stethoscope mics pick up the opposite performers voice and sound their voice into them.
